Effects of Water Extract of Caesalpinia Sappan L. on Extension of Life of Congenital Corpulent Diabetic KK Mouse

Abstract
This experiment covers observations on effects of extension of life span, of preventing deaths and of suppressing outbreak of diabetes among the congenital corpulent diabetic KK mice¢¥ through oral administration of the total water extract of Caesalpinia Sappan L. (hereafter to be called CSL). The experimental subject of this oral administration of CSL were mice of inbred 26th generation males, and it was done when they were 7 weeks old until they grew up to be 64 weeks old.
The Result:
1) The survival rates of KK mice with congenital corpulent diabetes till the date falling under 71 weeks old were 28. 6 percent for the Comparative Group, 50. 0 percent for the Experiment Group I, which were given 3-percent CSL, and 66.7 percent for the Expe¡þriment Group II, which received 6-percent CSL.
2) The average life span of KK mice died during the experiment were 38.8 weeks in the Comparative Group, 43.6 weeks in the Experiment Group I, and 48.2 weeks in the Experiment Group II.
3) Urine sugar positivity of KK mice was beginning to be apparent when they were about-18 weeks old in the Comparative Group, while it was 30 weeks old in the Group II, and there was little difference between the Group I and the Comparative Group.
4) Five mice in the Comparative Group and four mice in the Experiment Group I showed the symptoms of low blood sugar during the diabetic process and they all died out eventually. But in the Group II, although four mice showed the same symptoms of low blood sugar, only one died eventually and the remaining three recovered health to survive until 71 weeks old.
5) CSL could not suppress the outbreak of diabetes among the KK mice with naturally apparent congenital corpulent diabetes, but it did slow the progress of the diabetes and effectively lengthened life span of the mice with congenital diabetes.
